Main Features

Dual-Channel Communication with 25 W Output

At its core, the IC-M506 is a full-featured Class-D DSC VHF marine radio offering 25 W transmit power on the primary maritime band (156.025–157.425 MHz). A secondary 1 W setting conserves battery life during short-range operations. The radio monitors Channel 70 continuously for Digital Selective Calling (DSC) traffic, even while the user is tuned to another working channel. Up to 100 MMSI numbers can be stored for rapid individual, group, all-ships, urgency, and safety calls, ensuring rapid coordination with fleet mates, port control, or rescue authorities.

Integrated AIS Receiver for Real-Time Situational Awareness

One of the IC-M506’s headline features is its optional built-in AIS receiver. When fitted, the radio overlays AIS target data—position, course, speed, CPA, and TCPA—directly on its high-resolution dot-matrix display. Users can toggle between a plotter view, target list, or danger list, and initiate a DSC individual call to any selected vessel with a single button press. For captains who rely on a ship walkie talkie for collision-avoidance discussions, this “radar-like” awareness dramatically enhances safety, especially in congested shipping lanes or during low-visibility transits.

NMEA 2000 & 0183 Connectivity for Modern Bridge Networks

Modern vessels increasingly rely on integrated navigation and communication networks. The IC-M506’s NMEA 2000 interface allows plug-and-play connection to multifunction displays, GPS receivers, and autopilots, sharing PGNs for position, COG/SOG, AIS reports, and DSC call data. An optional UX-232 interface kit extends the radio to NMEA 0183 systems, while the UX-231 adds a second AIS receiver channel for redundancy. For integrators, this flexibility means the radio can be dropped into legacy 0183 architectures or modern 2000 backbones without additional protocol converters.

Active Noise Canceling & Voice Recording

Clear audio is critical when engine noise, wind, and wave action are ever-present. The IC-M506 employs bidirectional active noise canceling, reducing background noise by up to 90 % on receive and 30 % on transmit. A built-in voice recorder automatically captures the last two minutes of incoming audio, allowing users to replay missed calls—a valuable feature during complex maneuvers or when multiple alarms sound simultaneously.

Rugged, Submersible Construction

Both the main unit and the supplied HM-205B/RB microphone meet IPX8 standards, surviving submersion to 1 m for 60 minutes. The chassis also passes MIL-STD-810G tests for vibration, shock, temperature shock, salt fog, and blowing dust, ensuring long-term reliability in commercial service. For installers, this durability translates to fewer service calls and lower total cost of ownership.
