Can you describe what you will be talking about during your presentation at the BAPCO 2022 Annual Event. Why is it an important topic?
I’ll be talking about the current state of mental health within the emergency services. Despite national initiatives, there are still too many people becoming ill, leaving or taking their own lives as a result of mental illness.
What do you see as being the big issues and challenges for the sector over the next five years?
The biggest challenge is addressing the cultural stigma surrounding reporting mental health concerns and reducing occupational health response times for mental health conditions.
What will be the most transformative technological development over the next five years in relation to this topic?
Important developments will be the availability of treatments and appointments via video link. Also, [identifying] the connection between physical and mental health, as well as the deployment of electronic treatment. All are important technological adoptions within our industry to help improve mental health.
What key messages or take-home points would you like people to get from your session? What will be most useful to them from a practical point of view?
An awareness of the size and urgency of the problem. Also, what senior staff can do to help break down the stigma surrounding mental health.
